  2. responsible for inventing neon signs. He
  3. discovered in 1896 that acetylene, normally
  4. explosive, could be safely transported when
  5. disolved in acetone. He later demonstrated
  6. that neon gas could be used to provide a
  7. bright red light in signs. These were
  8. displayed publicly for the first time at the
  9. Paris Motor Show 1910. As an old man, Claude
  10. spent the period 1945-49 in prison as a
  11. collaborator.
